Pula
Medulin is some 4 miles or so from the town of Pula, a settlement which dates back to prehistoric times and which boasts a rich Roman heritage. Central to its fame is the extremely well preserved amphitheatre, one of the largest in the Empire and which still hosts concerts featuring world famous artists. Roman remains are extensive with a superb triumphal arch and a number of other well preserved building and artefacts. There are numerous other buildings of historical and architectural interest in this port of ancient strategic significance which once belonged to the Austrian Empire and in the last century was annexed by Italy for a period of 25 years. There are a wide range of shops and a simply superb open air market. An excellent fish market is housed nearby in one of the towns many old buildings. On the outskirts of the town are a number of large retail stores including a hypermarket. There are regular excursions by sea to Venice. North of Pula there are a number of very attractive small coastal towns and villages which have lost none of their historical charm.
